We teach along two different paths at the Communication Specialist College Doncaster, of which both aim to help students gain Maths and English skills needed to pass a nationally recognised qualification.
The first scheme developed by City & Guilds 3847 Certificate in Mathematics or English Skills' compromises a broad range of small units, each underpinned by the National Standards for Adult Literacy and Numeracy from entry Level 1 to Level 2. This route gives flexibility to the student in opting for a small award or larger certificate. it has purposefully been designed to create stepping stones that cover an individual's skills needed e.g. measure, understanding numbers etc.
A portfolio of evidence is completed and this can progress onto the next path; functional skills.
We offer Functional skills (4748) as our additional qualification; this can be more demanding. Functional skills at Entry and Level specifications aim to promote thinking and transferable skills rather than implicit learning. Such skills are useful in all aspects of work, education and everyday life.
It encompasses a wide range of skills in both English and Maths and students must have a competent understanding in order to achieve their possible online assessment. On achievement this may lead into employment or further qualifications.
We also deliver the new specifications of GCSE English Language through a 1-2 year course as well as GCSE Mathematics at foundation and higher tier. These new specifications are now graded 1-9, with a grade 4 currently considered a 'c' grade equivalent. New students who may wish to retake either exam to achieve a 4 have the option of doing so on the 1 year course.
