The Communication Specialist College - Doncaster is seeking a practical, motivated and student-focused Trades Technician to support our Joinery and Construction curriculum. This is a hands-on role working directly with staff and students to create safe, engaging, and high-quality learning experiences.

The role

As a Trades Technician, you will play a vital part in preparing materials, maintaining workshops, and supporting tutors during practical sessions. You’ll ensure students have safe, appropriate resources and provide practical assistance to help them develop independence, confidence, and vocational skills.

You’ll work across a range of construction disciplines including Joinery, Painting, Plastering, Brickwork, and Tiling, contributing to a high-quality learning environment.

Responsibilities will include

Workshop & Resource Preparation

  • Prepare, cut, and assemble joinery kits and materials for practical tasks.
  • Set up workshops and learning spaces, ensuring tools, machinery, and resources are safe and ready to use.
  • Manage inventories, stock levels, and databases of tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Support students by finishing or preparing products when tasks exceed students’ safe working ability.

Support for Teaching, Learning & Assessment

  • Assist tutors during practical sessions across multiple trades.
  • Provide hands-on support to students, offering guidance and demonstrations.
  • Work with students individually or in small groups adapting support to their needs.
  • Support evidence gathering for student portfolios, qualifications, and RARPA outcomes.
  • Promote independence, engagement, and positive learning behaviours.

Health, Safety & Maintenance

  • Maintain clean, organised, and safe workshops and preparation areas.
  • Carry out routine maintenance and safety checks on tools and equipment.
  • Implement maintenance schedules and liaise with external contractors.
  • Follow all health and safety procedures including risk assessments, COSHH, and safe storage of materials.
  • Ensure safe and appropriate distribution of tools and materials to students in line with risk assessments and SEND needs.

Quality, Compliance & Professional Standards

  • Uphold high standards of safeguarding, equality, diversity, and confidentiality.
  • Contribute to the Quality Framework, Self-Assessment Report, and Quality Improvement Plan.
  • Act as a positive role model, provide information and guidance about their own learning, behaviour, and consequences of their own actions to promote self-esteem.
  • Uphold college policies, professional standards, and statutory expectations, including those relating to safeguarding, SEND, and the FE Education Inspection Framework.

 

About You

Qualifications are not essential to apply for the position, however, the successful candidate should be willing to undertake further training.

Essential:

  • Experience using basic joinery tools and machinery.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work safely.
  • Understanding of health & safety regulations, using or producing risk assessments.
  • Commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity, and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Flexibility, resilience, and willingness to deliver personal care when required.
