What are Smart Energy Meters and what do they do?

Smart energy meters measure how much gas and electricity you’re using as well as what it's costing you, and then displays that information in an easy to understand in-home display. That means you no longer have to go outside, or struggle to access awkwardly cited meters to get your readings. It also means that you can wave goodbye to complicated meter readings and estimated bills. Smart meters automatically send readings to your energy supplier so that, once they’re installed, you’ll only ever pay for what you’ve actually used, not what the energy companies think you might have used. On average a household with a smart meter saves two percent per year, every year, on their energy. That might not sound like much, but it equates to 354kWh – enough energy for 155 hot baths or to listen to your favourite song on a tablet every day for 35 years! If the entire country had a smart meter installed, as a nation we’d save enough energy to power every household in Aberdeen, Cardiff and Manchester for an entire year.

What do Smart Meters look like and where do I get them?

A smart meter comes in two parts and will be installed by your energy supplier(s), absolutely free.  Your energy supplier will agree a time and date for their installation so you will need to be at home, and you will need to give their engineer access to your old meters. If you have both gas and electricity, the engineer will replace both of your existing meters with new ones or, if you’re just having Gas OR Electricity but not both replaced, he/she will just replace the one you’ve opted for.


The second part is an in-home display unit which will show you how much energy you're using in pounds and pence. The engineer will put this anywhere you ask him/her to put it and we suggest it’s somewhere out of the way, but with a good light so you’re able to read it easily.

All you need to do is to contact your supplier and they will make all the arrangements for you.

Why are Doncaster Deaf Trust Involved?

We have agreed to work with smart Energy GB to help people who are Deaf or Hearing Impaired. We are running open days, can assist with booking appointments with you, and answer any questions you may have, using British Sign Language. You will be able to attend any open day of your choice (dates shown below) just by sending your name and address including postcode, plus your choice of date to the e-mail address shown below. You will be able to ask any questions you want at these events, or, if you prefer not to ask questions in a room full of people, you will be able to book individual appointments with one of our advisers, using Skype or Facetime.

  • All events will be held in the Eastwood Restaurant, on the Doncaster Deaf Trust campus, Leger Way, Doncaster. DN2 6AY. (Opposite Doncaster Racecourse)
  • Sign posts to the event location will be placed at the entrance on the day.
  • All of the events will take place between 7.00pm and 8.30 pm.
  • There is plenty of on-site parking (free), a lift for anyone who needs it and amenities.
  • Tea, coffee, squash and biscuits will also be available.
