Ex footballer's team win professional quiz.- April 2011

Doncaster Deaf Trust played host to over twenty quiz teams recently as they looked to raise much needed funds for the Chelsea Flower Show next month.

The Trust, which has successfully secured a place at the show and will be competing in the Urban Garden category, hosted the quiz earlier this month and raised a staggering £4,000 that included a £1 for £1 charity donation from the HSBC.

The money will be used to finance the show entry and also the rebuilding of the garden in the Deaf Trust grounds for all students and staff to enjoy.

Bobbie Roberts, chair of the Deaf Trust, said:” The quiz was a fun filled evening that raised a lot more money than we anticipated. It was the perfect opportunity for local businesses to get involved and support the Trust, as well as enjoying an evening with colleagues.”

The quiz involved questions on Sport, the Oscars, general knowledge and a picture round featuring everyone who is anybody in the celebrity world!

The winning team was called ‘The Odd Jobs’ who fittingly came from a mixture of businesses across Doncaster and included Mick Bates (former Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers footballer), Nigel Ball, Ray Bicknell and Nick Beech.

Doncaster students shine at national conference

Two students from Doncaster shone under the spotlight at a national conference to highlight issues facing people who are deaf.

Andrew Haldane, aged 19, and Ridwan Ojetola (20), who currently study at Doncaster Deaf College, helped to organise the London event which aimed to raise awareness and improve the knowledge and understanding of those who can influence service and employment provision for the deaf.

Andrew and Ridwan had an opportunity during the conference, organised through the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), to ask a panel of professionals what was being done to combat the stigma associated with deaf students and what steps were being taken to improve the transition into higher education or employment.

Louise Reed, programme leader for Communications Support at Doncaster Deaf Trust, said: “The conference was a great success, with deaf learners from different parts of the country, including Doncaster, teaming up to put on the event.

“Both Andrew and Ridwan, should be extremely proud of themselves – they helped highlight the issues they come across on a daily basis by quizzing the professionals. They are so determined to succeed in life and will not let their disability hamper their future careers in any way, shape or form.”

The final part of the event was an awards ceremony to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of the students involved in organising the conference.

Doncaster Deaf Trust plays host to Gurkha Community

More than 150 of the Doncaster British Gurkha Community came together for an evening of music and dance recently to celebrate the New Year.

They met at Doncaster College for the Deaf to honour the annual festivity, with guests, dressed in brightly coloured traditional costumes, welcomed by Mr Khum Ale, chairman of the British Gurkha Community.

This was the sixth time the community have chosen to hold an event at the Doncaster College for the Deaf due to its welcoming environment and fantastic facilities.

Bobbie Roberts, chair of Doncaster Deaf Trust, said: “It was an honour that the Trust was able to play host once again to people who have historically fought, and been prepared to die, for our country and its people. To see them celebrate their history and tradition was a truly wonderful spectacle”

During the evening Mr Khum Ale presented Bobbie Roberts, chair of the Doncaster Deaf Trust a surprise donation worth £350 to be added to the Chelsea Flower Show fund.

Bobbie concludes: “It was very generous of the community to donate the money to our Chelsea Flower Show garden and will give us a real boost as we near the annual event in London next month (23^rd – 28^th). A big thank you goes out to the Gurkha Community and we look forward to welcoming them back to the Deaf Trust in the very near future. “

50 Year Service Celebrated

50year service celebrated

Doncaster Deaf Trust has recently celebrated two of its staff members reaching their 25 years service milestone.

Davina Middleton, (41) is an NVQ assessor, which gives her the responsibility to assess care workers and ensure they gain enough work based evidence to pass their qualifications.

Davina who joined the Deaf Trust aged just 18 after passing her qualifications - lives in France and visits the Deaf Trust three times a year, in the meantime she runs online training and development classes for the Deaf Trust staff from home.Tracy McCreery (47) is also celebrating her 25 year landmark. Tracy is a sports teacher at the College for the Deaf, and was part of the team that helped create the Sports Department.

Bobbie Roberts, chair of Doncaster Deaf Trust said: “We have a very good reputation here at the Doncaster Deaf Trust for providing high quality education and training - that is down to the dedication and hard work of our staff. “Davina and Tracy are two of the best, and experts in their individual fields. I was extremely happy to be able to present them with awards for their incredible achievement. They have both given 25years years of their life to the college, to help maintain our renowned reputation and because they thoroughly enjoy the work they do here.

“I would like to thank them both for being part of our strong foundation here at the College, and I for one, look forward to working with them for many more years to come.” Davina: “I have worked for the Doncaster College for the Deaf, for 25 years and I don’t know where the time has gone. “It’s been great working here and extremely rewarding. I have really enjoyed teaching both staff and students alike that have passed through the doors here.”

Deaf Trust calls upon green-fingered locals

Doncaster Deaf Trust is calling upon all garden enthusiasts to get involved with the hearing specialists’ first ever Chelsea Flower Show entry, and help prepare the beautiful plants that will be used at the annual spectacle.

The Deaf Trust was successful in entering the UK’s most prestigious flower show in the Urban Garden category and will head to Chelsea between the 25^th – 29^th of May, to complete against the best of the best designers and landscapers around.

The urban garden was designed by award winner Graham Bodle, whose family founded Blaxton based Walkers Nursery and Garden Centre over 60 years ago, and will be enjoyed after the event by the students and staff at the Doncaster Deaf College which appeals to their other senses which are often heightened.

Two secluded seating areas which will have benches facing each other to aid communication, as well as boasting a stunning backdrop of fruit trees and plants to allow sign language to be read easily without being backlit.

The planting is predominantly green, creating a calming effect with splashes of colour to add visual interest, fragrant plants and herbs are also included.

The focal point of the garden is a figurative sculpture aptly named ‘touch’ with a stone and steel water feature that will encourage students to touch and feel different textures and materials.

Bobbie Roberts, chair of trustees said: “We are more than thrilled to be showcasing our beautifully designed garden at the Chelsea Flower Show and would like local volunteers to get involved in our count down to one of the biggest events in the Deaf Trust’s history, to help prepare the stunning plants we will use in our final exhibition.”

Graham said: “It’s not only a very exciting time for the students and staff at the Deaf Trust but for the local community also. After the event we will again need the help of green fingered Doncaster people, to assist us in the re-build of the garden in the grounds of the Trust to help create a lasting tribute to everyone involved.

We will be looking for people who can spare a couple of hours, days or even a week to contribute towards the re-build of the garden and help out with plant preparation, planting, digging, and general landscaping, all help will be greatly appreciated.”
