Pupils mark Deaf Awareness Week with a lesson in Sign Language. Pupils at Hall Cross School in Doncaster are set for a special assembly this week (July 1) to mark Deaf Awareness Week.
More than 300 people will welcome visitors from Doncaster Deaf Trust, which includes nursery, school and college, to the assembly to raise awareness of deafness and the issues associated with it.
Pupils will be having a presentation on Deaf Awareness led by Susan Cobb and Jane Foulston the Trust’s Deaf Awareness and Sign Language Tutors who are both deaf with Matthew Cobb interpreting the session.
There will be the opportunity for the group to learn some basic conversational day-to-day signs.
Alan Robinson. Executive Principal from Doncaster Deaf Trust said: “We are very pleased that Hall Cross School have invited us to spend time with their students to raise their awareness of deafness and the impact it has on people’s lives.
“It is so important for people to have an insight into the impact being deaf or hard of hearing can have on an individual and the communication obstacles that our students face every day.Deaf Awareness Week takes place between June 28 and July 4 and organisations working with deaf people across the country are inviting everyone to 'Look At Me'.
The theme aims to improve understanding of the different types of deafness by highlighting the many different methods of communication used by deaf, deafened, deafblind and hard of hearing people, such as sign language and lipreading.
