Decades of service come to an end

29 Sep 2011

Married couple Eric and Sue Stuart have worked at the Doncaster Deaf Trust for a combined 80 years and had links with the deaf specialists since 1930.

Last week staff and pupils at the Leger Way site said farewell to the Stuarts as they look set to embark on new pastimes and sightseeing across the globe via cruise liner.

Eric said: “The Deaf Trust has had links in our family for almost a hundred years and deciding to retire was a very tough decision for both of us. We have had over 15 members of our family involved with the Trust in one way or another during that time and included our mothers, fathers, cousins, aunts, brothers and sisters.

“We are now looking forward to spending some quality time together and having more time to explore the family history and paint when we are not travelling.”

Eric worked at the Deaf Trust for 38 years and during that time had several different roles. He was also part of the team responsible for bringing a college to the site and his final position was head of student services which he took up in 1998. This gave him vast responsibility for all the students passing through the school and college and their education.

Sue has worked at the site, for over 40 years and during that time worked in the school hospital back in 1969 where she attended doctor appointments with students. She then took on several other roles as: a child care officer, classroom assistant then assistant principal social worker and finally head of care for school.

Sue said: “I have loved my time at the Doncaster Deaf Trust and found it incredibly rewarding. The staff are brilliant and the students have been a pleasure to work with.”

Bobbie Roberts, chair of the Deaf Trust said: “Both Eric and Sue will be greatly missed as they have proven to be the back bone of the Deaf Trust in recent years. I would like to thank them both for being part of our strong foundation here at the Deaf Trust and wish them all the best for their retirement.”

Eric and Sue have recently attended one of the Queen’s prestigious garden parties to mark their retirement thanks to a nomination from the Trust.
