Blooming success at Chelsea
01 Jun 2011

A victorious team from Doncaster is celebrating today (24 May) after picking up a prestigious accolade at the Chelsea Flower Show. In their first year at the world-renowned competition, The Doncaster Deaf Trust won a Silver-Guilt Flora award in the urban category.
Bobbie Roberts, chair of trustees, said: “Being invited to show a garden at Chelsea was exciting enough, but winning an award in the prestigious competition in our first year is unbelievable.
“Students and staff alike have thoroughly enjoyed the run up to the show with all the preparation of the plants and design work under the watchful eye of our incredible designer - to win an award puts the icing on the cake.”
The urban garden was designed by Graham Bodle, and will be enjoyed after the event by the students and staff at the Doncaster Deaf College when it’s rebuilt in the grounds of the deaf specialists later in the year.
The garden boasts two secluded seating areas which have benches facing each other to aid communication, as well as a stunning backdrop of fruit trees and plants to allow sign language to be read easily without being backlit.
The planting is predominantly green, creating a calming effect with splashes of colour to add visual interest, fragrant plants and herbs are also included.
The focal point of the garden is a figurative sculpture aptly named ‘touch’ with a stone and steel water feature that will encourage students to touch and feel different textures and materials.
Added Bobbie: “Graham has done a fantastic job in creating a visually beautiful and sensory garden which will benefit our deaf and hearing impaired students for years to come.
“We are now looking for people who can spare a couple of hours, days or even a week to contribute towards the re-build of the garden and help out with plant preparation, planting, digging, and general landscaping, all help will be greatly appreciated.”
